University of Amsterdam wins Moot Court Competition organised by the Dutch Association for European law (NVER)
The eighth edition of the moot court was held at the University of Groningen on November 28th 2014. Competing against Utrecht University and Leiden University, the teams were faced with a case concerning the impact of a permit granted to a Dutch power plant for the expansion of its business premises and the inclusion of a multi-fuel unit.
The case, created by professors Hans Vedder and Jan H. Jans of the University
of Groningen, presented challenging questions of both general European law and
European environmental law.
After having submitted written pleadings to the Court of Justice (prof dr. Laurence Gormley, Mr. Joost Hoogveld and Mr. Herman Speyart) and a successful first round of oral pleadings, the UvA team advanced to the finals against Leiden University.
After a short deliberation by the Court, UvA law school students Laura Mendel, Nathalie McNabb, Marieke Rozenbroek and Leonie Scholts (coached by A.S.M. Galama) were named the winners of the competition. The students were praised for their lucid pleadings and excellent teamwork throughout the entire competition.
