High French Award for Ernst Hirsch Ballin

On Thursday, October 30, 2014, Professor Ernst Hirsch Ballin, a professor of Human Rights at the UvA Faculty of Law, received the 'Officier de la Légion d’Honneur' (Officer in the Legion of Honour) distinction from the French Ambassador to the Netherlands.

According to the French Embassy, Hirsch Ballin, former Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament, has “demonstrated his attachment to France and French culture” throughout his career and has “played an important role in strengthen the Franco-Dutch relationship in the field of judicial cooperation.” In his acceptance speech, Hirsch Ballin recognized France’s contribution to Europe’s intellectual, legal and political culture and noted it as a source of inspiration.

 

This distinction is also a promotion: if Hirsch Ballin were to become a Member of Parliament again, he would be addressed with the rank of 'Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.'

 

In June of this year, Diana Dankers, Professor on Private Law, was also distinguished by the French Republic; she was named ‘Chevalier dans l'Ordre National du Mérite’ (Knight of French National Merit).
