Margot de Vries
Master's student in European Union Law
'I chose European Union Law because of its practical orientation.'
Margot de Vries discovered her profound interest in European law while she was completing her law and business bachelor’s degrees at the University of Utrecht. 'I was searching online for universities that offer European law programmes to decide which one was best for me,' says Margot, 'and the European Union Law track within the Master’s Programme International and European Law at the University of Amsterdam appealed to me most. I especially liked the fact that this track offers many practice-oriented courses, the option of taking part in a moot court and an International Law Clinic, which exposes students to real clients and issues. In addition, I supplemented my compulsory courses with courses in State Aid Law and European Competition Law, and I was motivated to do an internship and write a report about it for extra credits. In hindsight I’m very happy I did that.'
‘At the moment I am working as a researcher at the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance at the University of Amsterdam while looking for fulltime employment outside of the university. I’d like to train as a lawyer with a medium-size firm or work as a corporate lawyer. Because of my degree in corporate law I can also work in business. And I think competition law, both from a European and a Dutch perspective, is one of the most interesting areas of law.’
