Admission to the PhD Programme

Amsterdam Law School

If you do not yet work at the Amsterdam Law School, there are three ways of pursuing a PhD there: by being appointed as a PhD researcher, with external funding, or as an external PhD candidate. Varying conditions and procedures apply, and the length of the programme and certain financial considerations, among other things, can differ. The following chart explains the differences between the various candidate categories.

Employee PhD Candidate

Research Financing

The programme is financed by or via the UvA, and the candidate has an appointment at the UvA.

Project Length 4 years
Participation in the PhD programme Required
Facilities
  • Supervision by two (co-) supervisors;
  • Office space;
  • Use of Library;
  • UvA email address;
  • Participation in faculty activities, research groups, etc. 
Programme Starting Date 1 september, earlier in exceptional cases

 

Contract PhD Candidate

Research Financing

The programme is financed by another institution and the candidate does not have an appointment at the UvA.
Candidate Fees none
Project Length 4 years
Participation in the PhD programme Required
Facilities
  • Supervision by two (co-) supervisors;
  • Office space;
  • Use of Library;
  • UvA email address;
  • Participation in faculty activities, research groups, etc. 
Programme Starting Date 1 september, earlier in exceptional cases

 

External PhD Candidate

Research Financing

The project has no financing and the candidate does not have an appointment at the UvA.
Candidate Fees €2500 per annum
Project Length A maximum of 6 years
Participation in the PhD programme Required
Facilities
  • Supervision by two (co-) supervisors;
  • Use of Library;
  • UvA email address;
  • Participation in faculty activities, research groups, etc. 
Programme Starting Date 1 November and 1 April
