The UvA team put in another stellar performance at this year's Willem C. The team finished among the top 10%.

Awards across the board

This year's UvA team members were Glenn Klijn, Oliver Whitehead, Eva de Jong, Claire Overduijn and Edward de Rooy. The team beat the University of Sheffield in the eliminations rounds, but was subsequently defeated by the ironclad team from the National University of Singapore. With honourable mentions for both memoranda and all counsels at the Vienna competition, the UvA team still managed to take home awards in all categories, thus matching last year's performance, when the UvA team also finished amongst the top 32 out of more than 340 participating universities (in addition to placing first in the general rounds).

About the Willem C. Vis Moot Court Competition

The Willem C. Vis Moot Court is an international arbitration competition, which each year presents a new case centring on a cross-border corporate dispute governed by the Vienna Sales Convention. For participating Master's students, the competition is an unrivalled opportunity to pit their practical skills against other eager student teams from around the globe. Aside from competing, the Vis Moot Court also offers an excellent chance to connect with prominent lawyers and law offices from all over the world.

The competition consists of a written round in which students draft defence statements for both the claimant and the respondent. These are then exchanged and subsequently the oral arguments are presented in Hong Kong and Vienna. To polish their pleas, the students practise in so-called pre-moots, organised this year in Amsterdam, Hanover, Edinburgh and Shanghai, where students can gauge their performance against those of other participating universities.

Unforgettable experience

As every year, the UvA team members called the Vis Moot an unforgettable experience. 'The Willem C. Vis Moot Court is hands down the best and most fun experience I've had at university!' enthuses Glenn Klijn. 'Competing has really enabled me to develop skills like writing, argumentation and presentation. We received intensive coaching from our lecturers and practising lawyers, and got training at different law firms. After writing the claimant and respondent memoranda, we travelled to Hanover, Edinburgh and Shanghai to prepare for the oral arguments in Hong Kong and Vienna. That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, meeting students, lawyers and arbiters from all over the world.'

'We worked together really hard as a team and achieved fantastic results. I would definitely recommend this to any student with an interest in litigation, international commercial law or arbitration.'
