Successful UvA participation in the prestigious Willem C. Vis Moot Court

7 May 2013

In the weeks leading up to Easter, a team of five law students from the UvA successfully participated in the prestigious Willem C. Vis Moot Court.

The Willem C. Vis Moot Court is a moot court competition on international commercial arbitration. Annually, over 300 universities, including leading universities such as Harvard, Columbia, and Oxford, compete in the Willem C. Vis Moot Court. The 2012-2013 UvA team consisted of Tes Flapper, Pieter Spuijbroek, Simon Minor, Dewi Krop and Isabel Verkes.

Case: child labour at fashion label

This year's fictional case revolved around a dispute between a fashion label that purchased 100,000 polo shirts from a clothing manufacturer. After delivery of the polo shirts, it became apparent that the seller had used child labour. As a result, the fashion label suffered huge reputational and financial damages, made especially visible by its plummeting stock price. For six months, the students worked intensively on drafting comprehensive legal briefs. More specifically, they prepared written memoranda for both the plaintiff (the fashion label) as well as the defendant (the clothing manufacturer). The oral pleadings were held before tribunals of professors, lawyers and international arbitrators. The oral pleadings took place in Hong Kong and Vienna. In the run-up to the oral pleadings, the students had pre-moots (preparatory rounds) at several Dutch law firms - which acted as sponsors of the team - and at Humboldt University in Berlin.

Honorable mention for the UvA team

The UvA students reached a unique achievement this year. The team's memorandum on behalf of the respondent received an honorable mention in Hong Kong, which means that the memorandum was one of the top 25 briefs. In addition, the UvA team reached, as the sole Dutch university team, the 'elimination rounds'. The elimination rounds are reserved for the best 64 (of 296) university teams.
